Herb Gardens are Tasty, Attractive, and Simple

Even if you are not quite the green-thumb type, herb gardens aren't that difficult to grow.  The look very pretty in your kitchen or on your back porch, and you'll save money at the grocery store because most of your cooking staples will be right there at your fingertips.  If your neighbors here at our waterfront homes at the Lake of the Ozarks are into giving it a try too, you can even share what you grow with them.

Growing an herb garden can be easier than growing many houseplants.  If you choose to plant them in containers, they can be placed around your home outside or brought inside to grow.  They can make for lovely natural centerpieces.

To begin planting, you will need:

  • pots
  • good potting soil
  • plant fertilizer
  • water
  • herbs to plant

Suggested herbs to plant are:
  • basil
  • sage
  • oregano
  • thyme
  • lavender
  • rosemary
  • parsley
  • chives
  • cilantro

Each variety will require different instructions, so read directions carefully.  It is wise to read the planting and care instructions at the store before purchasing to make sure that you only choose plants that you are comfortable taking care of.  Most grow best in at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight a day.  The soil must be kept damp and regularly fed.

A container herb garden can be fun to take care of and rewarding to accomplish.  They bring added life to your home, and having fresh herbs around may even encourage you to get more creative with your recipes.  This is a wonderful project to try out at your Lake of the Ozarks waterfront home.  Good luck with the planting!
