If you only notice a few weeds sprouting here and there, you can spot-treat them using an herbicide that kills weeds but not grass. If your lawn is littered with a few more weeds than you care for, you may want to continue mowing your lawn through winter at the recommended height for your grass. Many common winter weeds can't survive repeated mowing and will die. Don't forget to use the mower's bag and capture the seeds as to avoid the weeds from spreading. 

Remove Debris

If you didn't get all the autumn leaves removed from the lawn before snow arrived, you can still tackle the task. Very carefully remove any debris that accumulates throughout the winter months. This is a great time to gently rake up any matted areas of the lawn. Raking these areas and removing debris can encourage better air flow throughout the turf grass and prevent possible disease and insect infestation. 

Organize Your Equipment

It's a great time to organize your lawn care equipment. Take advantage of the downtime and service your lawnmower. It may be time to change or sharpen the blade, install a new air filter, and install new spark plugs. Organize your lawn chemicals by discarding expired chemicals and ensure all products are off the ground and locked away.

Research Spring Fertilizers

Fertilizing in the spring can jump start your lawn out of its winter slumber. It can provide a nutrient build up that will give the lawn strength to withstand the heat stress and dryer temperatures of summer.

How to Hang Artwork Like a Pro

Art hung incorrectly can be terribly distracting to guests who notice it. When it comes to creating an aesthetically pleasing, comfortable design in your home, pay attention to the framed photos and artwork - too high or too small could ruin it all! Mission Bay is here to share some decorator-sourced tips and illustrations to show you how to hang artwork like a pro. Don't make one of the biggest decorating mistakes and follow these guidelines!

Over a Sofa

If your sofa is situated with its back to a wall, you may want to create a focal point with artwork, objects or pictures. Generally a piece of art or collection should be in the same shape and orientation of the wall it is trying to fill. A good rule of thumb is to hang art around 6-8" above a piece of furniture. 

Over the Mantel

When it comes to hanging art above a mantel there are some dos and don'ts. You do want to coordinate strategically. Because a fireplace is a natural focal point for a room, you may want to consider filling the space. Take advantage of your center-stage fireplace and choose a piece that will fill the space above the mantel, bridging the gap all the way to the ceiling. Generally, artwork that is about two thirds of the mantel over which it hangs - choose something that's either just narrower or wider to ensure that your art becomes a feature.

On a Big Wall

If you're going for the full-wall effect try framing and hanging them all uniformly. It's okay if some wind up below eye level or behind the furniture. Although, when arranging multiple pieces, you don't have to think in terms of the grid. Start in the middle and work your way out leaving about two inches between larger pictures, that goes for above, below and either side of the frame. 

In a Hallway

60" off the ground would place your pieces at eye level. Going with a themed photo collection down the hallway can highlight an important set of memories.

Over a Bed

The perfect location open to artwork is right above your bed. If a large scale piece, centered over the bed is the look you're hoping to achieve. Choose a piece that is a bit smaller than the bed's width. If a large headboard prevents you from hanging artwork directly over the bed, you can still hang something on the same wall. Try two smaller pieces of art over the nightstands. 

Before you start hammering nails into a wall, contemplate the quantity, type and arrangement of your wall hangings. From height and spacing to balance follow these guidelines for a pleasing look. Kiwanis Club of Ozark Coast will host the Annual Christmas for Kids event again this year on December 13, 2015 at The Country Club Hotel & Spa in Four Seasons.  Many local businesses come together to sponsor this event that benefits CADV, Wonderland Camp, Hope House, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Lake Regional Pediatrics, YMCA, Share the Harvest Food Pantry & Kid’s Harbor. 

You too can help!  The event costs $20/person plus a new unwrapped toy, or an additional $20 without a toy. Enjoy hors d’oeuvres and music performed by Shawn C and Captain Geech & The Shrimp Shack Shooters.  Doors open at 7:00 pm and there will be a silent auction, so come make Christmas wishes come true for underprivileged kids in the lake area!
