The Holiday Season Has Arrived

The Holiday Season has arrived here at the Lake of the Ozarks!  The weather is starting to cool down, Thanksgiving is next week, and Christmas is just around the corner. Now is the time to start thinking about Christmas decorations and of course...Christmas lights!  When you own a luxury waterfront home at the Lake of the Ozarks, you can experience all the amazing Christmas light displays around the Lake area. Mission Bay has the information for a few local displays you won't want to miss!

Enchanted Village of Lights 

The City of Laurie presents the Enchanted Village of Lights at the Laurie Fairgrounds starting this Friday, November 17. The Enchanted Village of Lights is one of the largest drive-through holiday light parks in Mid-Missouri. There is no charge to drive through the Enchanted Village, but any donations are greatly appreciated.  Hours of operation are 5-9 PM each night (open until 10:00 pm on weekends) through January 1, 2018.

Versailles Unity Circle of Lights

For the 11th straight season, the city of Versailles will light up its city park for the Unity Circle of Lights from November 25 - January 1. The holiday light park is named after the "Unity Circle," a monument erected at the park entrance to show cooperation among various entities in the community.  The Unity Circle of Lights is located at the junction of Highways 5 and 52 and will feature as many as 40 lighted displays, including several animated holiday scenes for the family. The park is open from dark until midnight and admission is free. 

St. Patrick's Festival of Lights

The Festival of Lights at the Shrine of St. Patrick, Hwy 5, Laurie, is the oldest light park in the area. It was started in 1981 with hundreds of lights decorating the buildings and grounds and has continued to grow each year. With 4,000 strings of lights, over 60 automatic timers and more than 350 extension cords, the Festival of Lights has turned into one of the major places to see. Instead of animated displays, the focus is on the true meaning of Christmas, Jesus, and His Mother, Mary. St. Patrick Festival of Lights will be open daily from 5:00 – 10:00 PM on Thursday, November 23^rd through Sunday, December 31st. There is no charge for this beautiful light display, it is simply our gift to the community.

Osage Beach Holiday Lights in the Park

Free Holiday Lights Drive-Thru Park. Over 100 Holiday themed light displays to enjoy at the Osage Beach City Park. Open Wednesday – Sunday evenings from November 25th through December 31st.

Deck the Docks Holiday Light Cruises

7th Annual DECK THE DOCKS Festival of Lights to benefit Dogwood Animal Shelter! Starting November 24th, the beautiful Celebration Yacht will embark on a cruise each Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday to tour sparkly docks and lakefront homes decorated for the holidays! Tickets are $25 each. 

All Passengers must book reservations in advance. Tickets may be reserved through Celebration Cruises by calling 573-480-3212 or on the website at www.cruiselakeoftheozarks.com.

Honoring All Veterans

This Saturday is Veterans Day and Mission Bay would like to honor and thank all service members that have served this great nation. Here is some history and facts about Veterans Day and what’s going on around the Lake of the Ozarks this weekend.

The History

In 1918, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, an armistice was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in World War I. One year later, in November 1919, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. The day’s observation included parades and public gatherings, as well as a brief pause in schools and businesses at 11 am.

 In 1954, after lobbying efforts by veterans’ service organizations, the 83rd U.S. Congress amended the 1938 act that had made Armistice Day a holiday – they had changed the word “Armistice” in favor of “Veterans”. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the legislation on June 1, 1954. From that day forward, November 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

Facts about Veterans in the United States

• According to the most recent statistics, there are 18.5 million veterans in the United States

• Only 50% of returning veterans who need mental health treatment will receive services.

• It is estimated that 1/3 of adult homeless men and nearly ¼ of all homeless adults have served in the armed forces.

• 20% of the veterans who served in either Iraq or Afghanistan suffer from either major depression or PTSD. 19.5% of veterans in these two categories have experienced a traumatic brain injury.

Events in the Community on November 11th

• 4th Annual Veterans Day Parade - Osage Beach City Hall to Lake of the Ozarks Elks Lodge Come out and support our veterans! Food and beverages will be available at Elks Lodge. Everyone is welcome!

• HyVee will honor all veterans and active military with a free breakfast buffet from 7-11 am.

• American Legion Zack Wheat Post 624 in Sunrise Beach will be providing a free breakfast from 7-10:30 am for Veterans, Firefighters, Police Officers, and EMTs.

• Show your military ID and enjoy a complimentary meal at RJ’s Family Restaurant West Highway 54 in Camdenton.

Winterizing Tips That Help Benefit Your Energy Bill

The weather has started to drop and people are beginning to crank their thermostats. Unfortunately, that doesn’t help when it comes to budgeting and saving money throughout the winter. It’s important to make sure your lakefront home at the Lake of the Ozarks is ready for the winter and the colder weather. Mission Bay has a simple guide with tips for winterizing your home all while saving money on your energy bill.

Caulk Any Gaps and Seals

Problem: Small gaps in windows, doors, or cracks in the walls are letting the cool air in and letting your warm air escape. This makes your furnace work harder and raises your energy bill.

Solution: You can test gaps to see which ones need to be sealed. Have a friend stand outside the suspected window or door with a blow dryer while you hold a lit candle inside. If the blow dryer blows the candle out, then you know you need to seal up those cracks. You should also check the caulk around your windows and doors outside to see if they’ve deteriorated over time.

Savings: According to the U.S. Department of Energy, you will save up to 30% of energy use annually by sealing up drafts.

Dodge the Draft

Problem: Cold air is rushing in from underneath your door. Where cold air is rushing in, warm air is usually rushing out.

Solution: The draft snake, which was adopted during the Great Depression era, is one of the easiest ways to cut back on energy waste. You can easily create your own draft snake at home by rolling up a towel or filling a pouch of fabric with sand or kitty litter. If you’re not interested in creating your own, you can always purchase one that is already made.

Savings: According to the U.S. Department of Energy, drafts can waste 5 to 30% of energy use per year.

Control Your Thermostat

Problem: You want your home to be warm and cozy, so you keep your thermostat set high at all times. Not only is your thermostat working hard, but your wallet is also suffering from the high energy bill.

Solution: Turn your thermostat down when you are asleep or when you leave the house. You won’t be able to enjoy the warmer temperature when you’re not even home. Another money saving idea is to get a smart or programmable thermostat. This allows you to control your thermostat from your phone.

Savings: Turning down your thermostat 10 to 15 degrees for about 8 hours a day can save you close to 10% per year on your energy bill.

Change the Direction of Your Ceiling Fans

Problem: The air from your furnace rises towards the ceiling, leaving colder air towards the ground. Even though your furnace is on, your house may not be as warm as you want it.

Solution: If you have any ceiling fans inside your home, then you should change their direction in the wintertime. Counter-clockwise rotation in the summer because it produces a cooling breeze and clockwise rotation in the winter because it pushes warm air back down.

Savings: According to the Daily Green, this method can help cut your heating costs by 10%.

It’s important to make sure your lakefront home at the Lake of the Ozarks is prepared for winter. The temperature may be dropping, but that doesn’t mean your energy bill needs to skyrocket. We hope these tips from Mission Bay will help keep your home warm and your energy bill low.

Fall Recipes to Warm Your Home

The weather is really starting to cool down and what better way to bring the fall inside than with some fall baking? Warm apple desserts are perfect for the crisp fall weather we are having. Why not enjoy some delicious fall dessert while sitting on your balcony at your beautiful lakefront home at the Lake of the Ozarks. These desserts are sure to be a hit. Check out some fall inspired recipes provided by Mission Bay. We would love to hear what you think and see pictures of how yours turn out!

Cinnamon Apple Crumb Cake

For Cinnamon Streusel Crumb:

1 ½ cup flour

½ cup brown sugar

¼ cup granulated sugar

½ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon cinnamon

¼ teaspoon nutmeg

½ cup butter – melted

½ teaspoon vanilla

1 large or 2 small tart apples – peeled and chopped

For the Cake:

4 tablespoons butter

½ cup granulated sugar

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla

½ cup sour cream

1 cup flour

¼ teaspoon baking soda

For Apple Cider Glaze:

½ cup powdered sugar

1 ½ - 2 tablespoons apple cider

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350F. grease 8-inch springform pan and line the bottom with parchment paper and set aside.

2. To make cinnamon streusel crumb in a bowl, whisk together dry ingredient, add melted butter and vanilla and stir until the mixture is evenly moist, set aside.

3. To make the cake in a large bowl, cream together 4 tbsp butter with ½ cup sugar until light and fluffy, add egg and beat well, then add vanilla and sour cream and beat again.

4. In another bowl, stir together 1 cup flour, baking soda, salt, and baking powder and add to the butter mixture, stir until just combined.

5. Spread half the batter at the bottom of the pan (this will be a thin layer). Spread the apple chunks evenly over the batter, then sprinkle about 1 cup of the cinnamon streusel crumbs over the apples. Spread the remaining batter over the crumbs and on top spread the rest of the cinnamon streusel.

6. Bake 35-40 minutes or until a tester inserted in the center comes out clean.

7. Before you remove the ring of springform pan run a thin knife around the cake.

8. To make the glaze, whisk together powdered sugar with apple cider and drizzle over the cake.

 Apple Pie Bites

Ingredients:

¼ cup packed light brown sugar

1 teaspoon apple pie spice, and additional apple pie spice (about ¼ teaspoon) for sprinkling on top of crescent rolls

3 tablespoons butter – melted

1/3 cup chopped pecans

1 small Granny Smith apple, cored and sliced into 8 (1/2 inch) slices

1 (8-ounce) can Pillsbury Original crescent rolls

Instructions

1. Preheat your over to 375 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. In a small bowl, combine brown sugar and apple pie spice. Set this aside.

3. Melt butter and toss apple slices in butter, set aside.

4. Arrange crescent roll triangles on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Evenly distribute brown sugar mixture onto each triangle.

5. Sprinkle each triangle evenly with the chopped pecans.

6. Place an apple slice on the wide end of each triangle. Wrap crescent roll dough around each apple.

7. Brush each crescent roll with remaining butter. Sprinkle lightly with additional apple pie spice.

8. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown. Cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Fall Charity Events at the Lake of the Ozarks

Lake of the Ozarks is not only a great place to vacation, it’s a great place to live and Mission Bay is a great year-round community. There are so many great community-wide charity events that are always taking place and this fall is no exception. Walk to End Alzheimer's - Saturday, October 7

Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. This inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to join the fight against the disease! When you participate in Walk, your fundraising dollars fuel our mission, and your participation in the event helps to change the level of Alzheimer’s awareness in your community. The Alzheimer’s Association provides free, easy-to-use tools and staff support to help participants reach their fundraising goal. While there is no fee to register, we encourage participants to fundraise in order to contribute to the cause and raise awareness.

41^st Annual Hospital Ball - Saturday, October 7

Join the Lake Regional Hospital Auxiliary at the 41st Annual Ball for an evening of dinner, dancing, and entertainment. The festivities will begin at 6 p.m. with a cocktail hour, followed by dinner and dancing. Flashback KC, an energetic eight-piece band with a three-piece horn section and outstanding vocalists, will provide the entertainment, and dinner will be a four-course gourmet meal.

During the past 41 years, this event has raised more than $2 million for Lake Regional Health System, benefiting the Cancer Center, Cardiac Catheterization Lab, the Emergency Department, the Family Birth Center, Surgery and more. 

Crush Pancreatic Cancer 5k Fun Run/Walk – Saturday, October 14

Join us as we raise money for the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research. Fun Run/Walk Registration at 9 am. Walk Begins at 10 am.
Family Pre-Registration Fee $60 (Up to 4 people).

Citizens Against Domestic Violence Brunch - Tuesday, October 17 

The 16th annual Citizens Against Domestic Violence Brunch will be held October 17, 2017, from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm at The Lodge of Four Seasons Campana Hall in Lake Ozark. The theme this year is “Favorite Sports Team.” Tickets and sponsorship opportunities are available. 

Last year, about 400 people attended the event which includes a buffet of what the best Lake-area restaurants have to offer. Each year, table sponsors go all out to decorate tables according to the theme. The program includes victim testimonials and information about how CADV helps victims in the Lake of the Ozarks community. Mike Clayton, of Mike & Stacy in The Morning on Mix 92.7, will EMCEE the event. 

8th Annual Totes for TaTa’s Event - Tuesday, October 24

Live and Silent auction of new and gently used purses, wallets and totes. $20 admission includes a drink ticket, heavy hors-d'oeuvres and door prize entry. All proceeds benefit the Lake Regional Cancer Center HOPE Program, helping local patients. A breast cancer survivor video, live music is also provided by Sax on the Beach and Byant Auction will be handling the live auction festivities.
