There are so many great community-wide charity events that are always taking place and this fall is no exception. Walk to End Alzheimer's - Saturday, October 7

Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research. This inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to join the fight against the disease! When you participate in Walk, your fundraising dollars fuel our mission, and your participation in the event helps to change the level of Alzheimer’s awareness in your community. The Alzheimer’s Association provides free, easy-to-use tools and staff support to help participants reach their fundraising goal. While there is no fee to register, we encourage participants to fundraise in order to contribute to the cause and raise awareness.

41^st Annual Hospital Ball - Saturday, October 7

Join the Lake Regional Hospital Auxiliary at the 41st Annual Ball for an evening of dinner, dancing, and entertainment. The festivities will begin at 6 p.m. with a cocktail hour, followed by dinner and dancing. Flashback KC, an energetic eight-piece band with a three-piece horn section and outstanding vocalists, will provide the entertainment, and dinner will be a four-course gourmet meal.

During the past 41 years, this event has raised more than $2 million for Lake Regional Health System, benefiting the Cancer Center, Cardiac Catheterization Lab, the Emergency Department, the Family Birth Center, Surgery and more. 

Crush Pancreatic Cancer 5k Fun Run/Walk – Saturday, October 14

Join us as we raise money for the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research. Fun Run/Walk Registration at 9 am. Walk Begins at 10 am.
Family Pre-Registration Fee $60 (Up to 4 people).
Deadline September 30th to guarantee your shirt.
Day of Event Individual Registration Fee $35 / Family Registration Fee $70.
Chili Cook-Off Registration at 10:15 am.
Serving Begins at 11 am.
Judging Begins at 11:30 am. Winners Announced at 12:30 pm.
Entry Fee $50 (up to 4 people per team).
Bring Chili “READY-TO-EAT”.

Citizens Against Domestic Violence Brunch - Tuesday, October 17 

The 16th annual Citizens Against Domestic Violence Brunch will be held October 17, 2017, from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm at The Lodge of Four Seasons Campana Hall in Lake Ozark. The theme this year is “Favorite Sports Team.” Tickets and sponsorship opportunities are available. 

Last year, about 400 people attended the event which includes a buffet of what the best Lake-area restaurants have to offer. Each year, table sponsors go all out to decorate tables according to the theme. The program includes victim testimonials and information about how CADV helps victims in the Lake of the Ozarks community. Mike Clayton, of Mike & Stacy in The Morning on Mix 92.7, will EMCEE the event. 

8th Annual Totes for TaTa’s Event - Tuesday, October 24

Live and Silent auction of new and gently used purses, wallets and totes. $20 admission includes a drink ticket, heavy hors-d'oeuvres and door prize entry. All proceeds benefit the Lake Regional Cancer Center HOPE Program, helping local patients. A breast cancer survivor video, live music is also provided by Sax on the Beach and Byant Auction will be handling the live auction festivities.

4th of July Fun Facts

The 4th of July is an important date in US History that represents our country's independence. With all the hustle and bustle at the Lake, sometimes its hard to remember what the holiday really means for us.  In 1776, the Declaration of Independence was approved and the 13 original colonies were on the road to freedom.  This holiday will forever be marked with red, white and blue flags, fireworks, parades and BBQs across the country!  Here are some fun facts about the 4th of July brought to you by Mission Bay and the US Census Bureau!

US Population 
In July 1776, an estimated 2.5 million people were living in the newly independent nation.  Today our population is estimated at nearly 318.4 million.  Look how we've grown!

Declaration of Independence Signers
The Declaration of Independence was signed by 56 different people, with representatives from each of the 13 original colonies.  Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Roger Sherman and Robert R. Livingston comprised the committee that drafted the Declaration, with Jefferson actually writing the majority of it.

Fireworks
In 2013, the value of fireworks imported from China was $203.6 million, representing the majority of all US fireworks imported.  By comparison, the number of fireworks exported by the US came to only $10.2 million in 2013.

US Flags
In 2013, $4 million worth of US flags were imported, most of them again made in China.  The dollar value of our flags exported was $781,222, with the Dominican Republic as the leading customer.

Patriotic Place Names
In our country, 59 places contain the word "Liberty" in their name.  Pennsylvania is home to more of these places than any other state with 11.  Indiana is the only place with the word "Patriot" in a place name.  The most common patriotic word used in place names is "union" with 136.  Pennsylvania also has more of these than any other state with 33.  Other popular words used in place names include Washington with 127, Franklin with 118 and Lincoln with 95.

4th of July BBQs 
The total estimated number of hogs and pigs as of March 1, 2014 is 62.9 million.  Chances are that the pork hot dogs and sausages you will consume on July 4th originated in Iowa, the home to an estimated 19.8 of those hogs and pigs.

The total estimated production of cattle and calves in Texas in 2013 was 6.1 billion pounds.  There's a goof chance that the beef hot dogs, steaks and burgers on your grill this 4th of July came from Texas, which accounts for nearly 1/6 of the nations total production.

Tracking numbers such as these allow us to know how our country is changing and growing, as well as how to make informed decisions about our country's future. 10 Boating Safety Tips for Summer Fun at the Lake of the Ozarks

Boating Season is finally here and Summer Vacation is just around the corner!  No matter how much experience you have out on the water, its always a good idea to review some boating safety tips before you depart from land. DiscoverBoating.com has a great list of 10 basic boating safety tips for you to remember.

1. Be Weather-Wise - Always check the weather before you head out on the water.  The last thing you want to happen is to get stuck in a storm while on a boat.  If you notice darkening clouds, volatile and rough changing winds, or sudden drops in temperature, play it safe by getting off the water.

2. Follow a Pre-Departure Checklist - Be prepared for any possible situation while on the water. From compliance with fire safety regulations to tips for fueling up, following a pre-departure checklist will ensure no boating safety rules or precautions haven't been overlooked.

3. Use Common Sense - One of the most important parts of boating safety is to use your common sense.  This means operating at a safe speed at all times, especially in crowded areas, being alert at all times, and steering clear of large vessels and watercraft that can be restricted by their ability to stop or turn around.  Buoys and other navigational aids have been placed there for a reason, so be respectful of them.

4. Designate an Assistant Skipper - Make sure that more than one person on board is familiar with all aspects of handling the boat.  In case of the primary navigator being injured or incapacitated in any way, having someone else that can follow the proper boating procedures to get everyone safely back to shore is important.

5. Develop a Float Plan - Be sure to let someone, whether it be a family member or the staff at your local marina, know that you are going to be out on the water.  This should include where you are going and how long you are going to be gone.  A float plan can include the following information: name, address, and phone number of trip leader, name and phone number of all passengers, boat type and registration information, trip itinerary, and types of communication and signal equipment on board.

6.  Make Proper Use of Life Jackets - Did you know that the majority of drowning victims as a result of boating accidents were found not to be wearing a life jacket?  Make sure that your family and friends aren't part of this statistic by assigning and fitting each member on board with a life jacket prior to departure.  For more information on life jackets, click here.

7. Avoid Alcohol - Practice boating safety at all times by saving the alcohol for later. The probability of being involved in a boating accident doubles when alcohol is involved, and studies have also shown that the affect of alcohol is exacerbated by external effects such as sun and wind.

8. Learn to Swim - If you are going to be in and around the water, it is important to know how to swim.  You can't always rely on someone else being there to help you.  Local organizations such as the American Red Cross and others offer swim training for all ages and abilities, so check to see what classes are offered in your area.

9. Take a Boating Course - Whether you are a beginner or expert boater, you need to be familiar with boating safety rules of operation. Boater education requirements vary by state with some requiring validated completion of at least one boating safety course.  Regardless of these requirements, it's always important to be educated, aware and prepared for everyday circumstances that might arise. 10. Consider a Free Vessel Safety Check - The US Coast Guard offers complimentary boat examinations to verify the presence and condition of certain Safety Equipment required by State and Federal regulations.  They also offer virtual online safety checks as well.  To find a vessel Safety check examiner near you, click here.
