How to Choose the Right Paint for Your Room

Painting is a great way to spruce up a room and express your personality and style. You might already have a paint color in mind, but then you have so many different types of paint to choose from. The sheen of the paint can make a huge difference in your room! Here are a few tips from HomeDepot.com on choosing the right paint sheens for your Lake of the Ozarks home.

Paint Sheen

Paint is available in a variety of different sheens. Before you choose one, you need to understand the qualities of each type. Paints without a shine or sheen are referred to as flat or matte finishes. These types diffuse the light reflecting off the paint. A semi-gloss or glossy sheen reflects light more directly, much as a mirror reflects light. Nearly every sheen could be used in any room, but some are better suited for high-traffic areas than others.

Types of Sheens

Flat or Matte finish is frequently used in new construction and on ceilings because it hides flaws extremely well. Eggshell or low-luster finishes provide a similar appearance to the surface of an egg. The slight sheen creates a soft, velvety finish. Satin sheens are slightly more reflective and are great at resisting mildew, dirt and stains. They can withstand cleaning better than flat or eggshell finishes. Semi-gloss and glossy sheens create a bright, shiny look. They are both durable and aesthetically pleasing, however, they show nearly every imperfection in a surface. Semi-gloss offers high resistance to moisture. There are several things to consider with each type of sheen and some sheens work better in certain rooms than others:
  • Flat/Matte:
    • Provides a smooth, subtle finish
    • Camouflages imperfections
    • Ideal for low-traffic areas
    • Diffuses light
    • Holds dirt and is more difficult to clean
    • Rubbing with cleanser may burnish the finish
    • Suggested Rooms: Living Room, Dining Room, Bedrooms, Ceilings, Family Room, Hallways
  • Eggshell/Low-Lustre:
    • Offers an elegant low-sheen finish
    • Best for low-traffic areas
    • Smooth surface
    • More washable than flat sheens
    • Suggested Rooms: Living room, Dining Room, Bedrooms, Foyer, Family Room, Hallways, Kitchen, Trim
  • Satin:
    • Can be wiped clean
    • Provides an elegant finish
    • Ideal for more active rooms
    • Extremely versatile
    • May be used indoors or outdoors
    • Suggested Rooms: Family Room, Playroom, Laundry Room, Kitchen, Guest Bathroom, Dining Room, Children's Bedroom, Trim, Shutters, Doors
  • Semi-Gloss:
    • Can be scrubbed clean with ease
    • Smooth sheen reflects light directly to create shine
    • Ideal for high-traffic areas
    • Easy to wash
    • May be used indoors or outdoors
    • Suggested Rooms: Kitchen, Bathrooms, Cabinets, Doors, Trim, Molding, Hallway
  • Gloss:
    • Can be scrubbed clean with ease
    • Offers a smooth high-shine finish
    • Ideal for surfaces that require frequent washing
    • Suggested Rooms: Trim, Woodwork, Molding, Doors, Cabinets, Kitchen, Bathrooms

It's Spring Cleaning Time!

Spring is here and soon you'll want to be outside soaking up the sun! Now is the time to get your spring cleaning done so you can enjoy outdoor living at the Lake of the Ozarks this season. So grab your broom and try out these 5 spring cleaning tips from HowStuffWorks.com:

1. Start with a Plan.

Spring is typically the time when you do a deep clean of your house. Hopefully, you've been keeping up with the basic dusting, mopping, vacuuming and scrubbing routines throughout the winter months, but now is the time to really get your house not only clean, but also organized. With so much to do, you need to make a plan. If you just start cleaning randomly, you can get discouraged. Make a list of all the things that need to be done and then prioritize them. By checking the items off your list, you'll see how much you've actually gotten done even if it doesn't look that way to you.

2. Take Your Time.

While you may be able to get a lot done in a weekend, depending on the size of your house, you need to think realistically. Don't try to do everything too fast; you want to do it right don't you? Using a divide-and-conquer technique, break your to-do list down into manageable chunks. When making dividing up your time, be sure to allow some time for breaks. You don't want to get burn out on cleaning and give up on the entire project. At the same time, don't stop to take a look at every little thing you find while cleaning.

3. Be Prepared.

Before diving in, make sure that you have everything you're going to need. It's not very effective if you have to keep stopping to run to the store for supplies. Most likely you'll already have the basics, but at a minimum you'll need an all-purpose cleaner for everything from walls to floors and a glass cleaner for windows and mirrors. Don't forget about specialized cleaners , like oven cleaner, silver polish or wood oil, because you probably don't use those as much. Your tools are just as important too, so be sure to inspect everything from brooms to mops, and replace them if they're in bad shape. Sweeping can take twice as long with a frayed broom.

4. Declutter and Organize First.

If all you do is shuffle piles of stuff to clean around them and then put them back, you're not helping yourself. Before you can clean, you need to declutter and organize. While there are many different ways to do this, the simplest way to go about it is to make 3 piles: keep, toss and donate or sell. A common issue with this is letting the donate/sell pile sit there. Be sure to set aside some time to deal with it so you don't start dragging it back into your home. Once you have settled on the items to keep, think about how you can better organize them.

5. Include Home Maintenance.

Spring cleaning doesn't have to strictly be inside your house. Spring is the perfect time to also take care of some home maintenance tasks that could use your attention. Before it gets hot, have your air conditioner checked out. While weatherproofing may seem like a winter task, caulking your windows and sealing any other leaks can help keep the cool air inside once you turn that AC on. Warmer weather means you'll want to spend more time outside, so make sure your patio or deck is in tip-top shape as well.
