Holiday Traditions

Are you going to be celebrating Christmas at your lakefront home at the Lake of the Ozarks? Whether your home at Mission Bay is your permanent home or your second home, it creates the perfect backdrop for holding any holiday get together. At Mission Bay, you also have access to the clubhouse and indoor pool. Check out these great holiday traditions you and your family are sure to love!

Make hot cocoa and drive around and look at Christmas lights.

Christmas lights are full of holiday cheer. Getting into the holiday spirit with Christmas lights is a great event for the whole family. You can make an entire night out of it by making (or buying) hot chocolate and driving around through different neighborhoods or light shows looking at all of the magical lights.

Give matching pajamas for every family member on Christmas Eve.

Having matching pajamas on Christmas Eve is a perfect time for photos! Each year you could have a different theme and everyone can help pick out the type of pajamas. This is a great time to bond with your family and spend some quality time together.

Take your kids shopping for a toy to donate.

‘Tis the season for giving! What better way to teach kids the true meaning of Christmas than to take them shopping to pick out a toy for someone less fortunate? There are many programs around the community where you can help a child in need or maybe they know someone personally who could use a little Christmas spirit this holiday season. Not only will they understand the importance of the holiday season, but giving and helping someone less fortunate is rewarding.

Make gingerbread houses with the whole family.

This is one activity that everyone will love. When it comes to creating gingerbread houses, there are endless possibilities. Whether you buy a gingerbread house kit or you are a do it yourself, kids and adults will be able to tap into their creative side and create a one of a kind creation. You can even create a village or a neighborhood with all of your houses.

Bake cookies with the kids.

This is a tradition that is a staple in many households. Not only is it a great way to get the kids involved, but it’s a tradition that is usually passed down from generation to generation. You can even make this more meaningful by using recipes that have been passed down. What’s better than spending time with your family and being able to enjoy delicious cookies at the same time?

Have a camp out one night under the Christmas tree.

There is something so magical about the Christmas tree and the lighting it provides. Why not create a pile of pillows and blankets and have a slumber party under the Christmas tree? You can even watch a marathon of Christmas movies and enjoy the delicious Christmas cookies you have baked.

Merry Christmas from Mission Bay

Here at Mission Bay, these are just a few of our favorite holiday traditions. We hope you have a great holiday season at your lakefront home at the Lake of the Ozarks. Winter Activities At The Lake of the Ozarks

Lake of the Ozarks may be known for summer fun on the water, but what many don't know is, the area offers fun winter activities, great shopping, and excellent restaurants all year long. Boats may be winterized, pool toys put away for the season, and winter boots resting near your front door instead of flip flops, but that doesn't mean the Lake of the Ozarks can't be enjoyed during the winter as well. For lake area homeowners who spend a good deal of time on the water during the summer months, you may find that winter shopping is less congested and more fun - not to mention the great values on overstock summer items!

Bridal Cave is a gem of the Ozarks. Centuries ago the Osage Native American Indians discovered the pristine beauty that lies beneath Thunder Mountain in Camdenton, Missouri. Guided tours leave every few minutes and last approximately one hour. Park interpreters will lead you and your family through room after room of incredible mineral deposits. Bridal Cave tours can be enjoyed rain or shine, any time of the year and your family is sure to have an adventure they will not soon forget!

Get Air Trampoline Park

One of the newer attractions at the Lake area, Get Air Trampoline Park in Osage Beach, Missouri is a fun way to spend a chilly winter day. For evening entertainment, you can find hot spots throughout the area - live bands and karaoke are buzzing year-round!

Ha Ha Tonka State Park

Local outdoorsmen/women know that Missouri weather is unpredictable, which to their advantage, means hiking during the winter months is a great way to enjoy the Lake of the Ozarks. Ha Ha Tonka State Park is a breathtaking scene of classic architecture and beautiful nature. The park features the stone ruins of a turn-of-the-20th-century castle built by a prominent Kansas City businessman atop a bluff. More than 15 miles of trails traverse the park, taking visitors to natural wonders and treasured spots leading to the Lake of the Ozarks.

Your Guide to Planning a Holiday Party

The holiday season is here and holiday parties are in full swing. If it’s your turn to host the annual holiday party for friends and family, don’t sweat it! Not only do you have the best location, your lakefront home at the Lake of the Ozarks provides an amazing backdrop for any party, but we have some helpful tips for you. Mission Bay has put together a few tips to help eliminate the stress that comes along with planning and executing a holiday party.

Choose a Theme

Whether your party is on the smaller side, or the guest list is over 100 people, having a specific theme and tone for your party will help achieve the maximum holiday feel-good status. A great way to come up with a theme? Make a list of what your guests have in common and what everyone likes.
Large Group: Celebrate with a movie theme. Take a poll ahead of time of people’s favorite holiday movies. During the showing of the movies, serve a variety of holiday-themed popcorn and set up a hot chocolate bar.
Just Your Girls: Do a cocktail tasting party. You can have everyone bring their favorite holiday cocktail and try them all out. You can make drinks with and without alcohol.
If kids are coming: Incorporate cooking and decorating to keep the kids involved. You can use holiday cutout cookies and create delicious holiday cookies.

Create Your To-Do List

Organizing and hosting a holiday party can be overwhelming. The easiest way to help eliminate stress is to create a to-do list.
Who will be invited and how will I invite them? Look back at the theme you have chosen and it will help you identify your guest list. You had certain people in mind when deciding on the theme, invite them! You can then determine which method of communication you want to use to invite everyone. You can do a printed invitation or even an electronic invite. Be sure to send invites at least 2 weeks ahead of time.
When Should You Have Your Party? The holiday season is extremely busy for everyone, but if you plan ahead, you can increase the chances that almost everyone you invite will be able to make it.
This is just a start to your to-do list. Every party is different and will have different items on their to-do list. Make sure you help reduce your stress level and sit down and create your party’s to-do list.

Stick To Your Budget

The best parties don’t have to be the most expensive and during the holiday season, the last thing you want to do is break the bank throwing a holiday party. Before you buy anything, take inventory of what you already have and then create a list of what you need and set a realistic budget.
Create a spreadsheet – itemize things you already have like decorations and ingredients. Knowing what you already have will save you from buying duplicates and will save you time and money.
Consider a potluck – incorporating a potluck into your party is not only a great way to get your guests involved, but it saves you from spending a lot of money.

Cook Ahead of Time

Prepare your menu and do as much prep ahead of time as possible. This will allow you to spend less time in the kitchen and more time mingling and spending time with your guests. That is the point of the holiday party after all – spending time with the ones you love.

With a little organization and prep, you can create a great holiday party at your lakefront home at the Lake of the Ozarks while saving money and reducing your stress. Mission Bay knows it’s important to make time for what matters this holiday season and that’s spending time with friends and family. If you haven’t stopped by our year-round development at the Lake of the Ozarks, now’s the time!

Holiday Decorating Tips

Decorating your home for the holidays is one of the most common and fun traditions. It’s a way to get the whole family involved and spend some quality time together. Each year, Christmas and holiday decorations hit the shelves earlier and earlier. While Christmas decorations add a festive and fun touch to your luxury waterfront home at the Lake of the Ozarks, there are a few tips to keep in mind. Holiday lights and electrical decorations can increase the risk of fires and electrical injuries if not used safely. Mission Bay has a few holiday decorating safety tips to keep you and your family safe this holiday season.

A Real Christmas Tree

If you plan on purchasing a live Christmas tree this year, be sure to check for freshness. A fresh tree is less of a fire hazard. Fresh trees are a deep green and the needles are hard to pull from the branches. The trunk of the tree will also be sticky with resin. Once your tree is home and decorated, it’s extremely important to make sure you water your tree on a regular basis. This will help keep the tree from dying and drying out. This also helps lower the fire hazard.

Christmas Tree Decorations

If you have small children or pets at home, you should pay close attention to the placement of your ornaments. If you place ornaments near the bottom of the tree, make sure they aren’t breakable and that they are nontoxic. You should also consider replacing metal hooks with ribbon or string to prevent any potential injuries. Make sure you evenly space out decorations so that both sides are weighted evenly. Too much weight on one side could cause the tree to tip over.

Using the Fireplace

It’s important to have your fireplace and wood stove inspected annually. You should also hire a professional chimney sweep to clean it. You should never throw wrapping paper into a fire because it can ignite quickly and burn more than you might expect. You should also be careful when using “fire salts” that change the color of the flame. They can be extremely dangerous and poisonous if ingested.

Lawn Decorations

If you have any blow-up lawn decorations, it’s important to make sure that they are properly secured to the ground. They can easily blow away and wreak havoc if you’re not careful. You should always turn the fan blower off when it’s windy, when you’re not going to be home for a long period of time, or when you head to bed. You should also make sure these decorations are kept away from any outdoor lighting.

Extension Cord Use

When using an extension cord, make sure to select a cord that is long enough so you don’t need to string several together. Extension cords should not be placed in high traffic areas or under rugs or furniture. You should also make sure that the extension cord is properly rated for its intended use; whether that’s indoor or outdoor.

We hope these tips help keep you safe while you decorate your luxury waterfront home at the Lake of the Ozarks this holiday season. Mission Bay offers Lake Living at its finest with gorgeous lake view and lakefront homes at the Lake of the Ozarks. This year-round development also offers a great clubhouse with heated indoor pool and outdoor pool and hot tub. It’s great for entertaining friends and family this holiday season.

Thanksgiving Traditions

Everyone has their own “way” of doing things, whether it’s the way you’ve done them for years, or it’s the way your mother has always done it. At Mission Bay, we believe that Thanksgiving is a great time to consider incorporating some new traditions into the holiday. The best waterfront homes at the Lake of the Ozarks has some fun new traditions that could change up the way you do Thanksgiving.

Take “personal time” before you spend the day with family.
Thanksgiving is a wonderful day that is filled with lots of family time - and we mean LOTS. While we all love family time, sometimes it can be extremely exhausting and overwhelming. This is why we suggest you take some time for yourself before all of your family arrives. By starting your day off this way, it could lead to a better day with family.

Have everyone write what they’re thankful for on a butcher paper tablecloth.
Talking about what you’re thankful for is a tradition that many families do. Why not take it up a notch and write down what you’re thankful for? Everyone can take turns and then you are able to save those memories that mean the most to you.

Let everyone make their own toast.
This is another way that people can show their emotion and give thanks. By letting everyone make their own toast, it brings everyone closer and lets people express their gratitude and feelings. So, have everyone raise their glass and toast to the year, to your family, and to your friends.

Let the kids help serve dessert.
Kids are always looking for ways to help, whether we want them to or not. Letting them help serve the dessert will keep them engaged and give them a sense of purpose. Whether they are toddlers or they’re older, you can put them in charge of serving the dessert after the meal.

Have Thanksgiving dinner at dinnertime.
A lot of families eat their Thanksgiving meal early in the afternoon and that’s totally acceptable. But why not make Thanksgiving dinner just that – a dinner? Not only does it slow down the entire day it gives you more time to cook and prep. Who wouldn’t like a few extra hours to complete the cooking? It also helps make the morning and afternoon more enjoyable.

Take a nice long walk after dinner.
Why not give yourself some time between dinner and dessert? No one can really eat dessert right after dinner anyways. After you finish dinner, take a long walk with your family! You will be able to enjoy the (weather permitting) cool, crisp fall weather and it will probably help your dinner settle. It may also make more room for pie – who wouldn’t want to eat more pie?

Remember loved ones who have passed.
Holidays are a great time to spend time with family, but they can be bittersweet for some. When you are missing family members or friends, celebrating that holiday can be tough. On these special holidays, take some time to remember those who have passed.

Stay connected with any family members far away.
If you live far away from your family members, why not spend Thanksgiving with them virtually? Traveling during the holidays is not only expensive, but it can also be stressful. If you’re not able to travel for the holiday, you can still eat dinner with them over Facetime or any video call service.

Happy Thanksgiving from Mission Bay
