3 Tips for Choosing Your Kitchen Finishes

If you are remodeling your Lake of the Ozarks waterfront home, deciding on finishes can be one of the most challenging aspects, especially for a kitchen remodel. There are no set rules for choosing materials and finishes, which can make the process even more confusing, and every project is different. Mission Bay residential development at the Lake of the Ozarks has some tips to help you make sense of your kitchen remodel.

1. Start With The Counters

The countertops are a great place to start when deciding what color concept you want in your kitchen. This is because it can be the biggest single item of color and texture, especially if your kitchen has an island. The countertops can be the basis for the rest of your kitchen's materials palette.

You will want to choose a countertop that is durable and easy to clean, such as granite or a composite material like Caesarstone. If you want your kitchen to make a bigger statement, you can choose a material such as stainless steel, zinc or natural wood. You will want to aim for a material that's light, smooth and reflective. Large tiles or slabs of stone will minimize grout lines and create a smooth and easy-to-clean surface. It's best to stick with a single countertop material, with a slight variation at the pantry or island for consistency and simplicity.

2. Choose The Cabinets

If your kitchen has more cabinets than counter space, then you may want to consider beginning with them instead. Cabinets can be one of the most prominent item, as they are usually eye level. It's best to keep them simple and natural. Slate, marble and wood are all common choices. It's best to stick to a small color palette, no more than 3 different materials, to keep it simple. It's best to keep the cabinets light in color to open and brighten the space. However, you can use other materials in small doses for visual depth and texture.

3. Pull The Space Together

You can use contrast to pull the entire space together. If the counters are a rich, dark color, go with a lighter backsplash. While a monochromatic approach can be great, if the countertop is visually active, calm use a simple backsplash to make it stand out. Choose a backsplash color that visually contrasts with the countertop and cabinets. Floors are usually decided based on the surrounding rooms, but make sure the colors won't clash with what's in your kitchen. Lighting, fixtures, bar stools and hardware can bring the entire look together. However, less is more. If there are too many different materials and colors, it could look busy.
